DIE FOR A SELFIE

As far as we know, the young man in the photo survived his selfie, at least this one.

The 379 people who died from taking a selfie from 2008 to July this year were not as lucky. They are not few if one considers that they have been preventable deaths: on average one every 13 days. The same report published by the iO Foundation, specialized in Tropical and Traveler Medicine, indicates that in the first seven months of 2021 there have been 31 fatal accidents - one per week - of those registered, exception made of non-lethal serious accidents.

“Falls from places such as waterfalls, cliffs and rooftops are by far the cause that most often ends up turning the long-awaited photo into a tragedy, with 216 cases. They are followed by accidents related to means of transport (123), drowning (66), firearms and electrocutions (24 each) and injuries received when photographing with wild animals (17). By age, fatal accidents are more frequent among adolescents up to 19 years of age (41% of the total) and twenty-somethings (37%) —the average age of the deceased is 24.4 years—, while the proportion between men and women is from three to two. "

Why make yourself visible even at serious risk of your own life? It is discounted that the selfie is to make it public in a social network or at least display it in front of those closest to you. In societies marked by anonymity in large cities, one's own visibility has become something valuable as a way to achieve recognition from others: an old human aspiration to strengthen one's own identity.

Umbergo Eco helps us in reflection.

“I show myself; therefore, I am. "
"I tweet, therefore I am."

“... the main asset will be visibility. Where to be recognized by others and not vegetate in a horrible and unbearable anonymity, anything will be done in order to appear on television, or in the media that by then would have replaced television. [...] The first hero was the stupid who stood behind the interviewees and waved his hand. This allowed him to be recognized later in the bar ("I saw you on television?"), But these appearances were very short-lived. So gradually the idea was accepted that in order to appear in a constant and evident way, you had to do things that in another time would have caused a bad reputation. " [...]

“Because the human being, to know who he is, needs the gaze of the other, and the more the other loves and admires him, the more he recognizes himself (or thinks he recognizes himself); and if instead of just one other there are a hundred or a thousand, or ten thousand, much better, he feels completely fulfilled. So, in a time of great and continuous displacement, where we all long for the hometown and the feeling of rootedness, and the other is someone with whom we communicate remotely over the internet, it will seem natural that human beings seek recognition for other routes, and that the town square is replaced by the almost universal audience of television or whatever has replaced it. "

The higher the risk, the greater the number of "likes" and/or followers.

Will a selfie pay for one's life?
